Back to School Nerves? I Hope They Never Go Away… They’re My Secret Weapon

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen those artists who fill stadiums and, at every concert, say almost the same things. They say stepping onto the stage is scary. Scary. But once the lights come on and they step onto that stage, the fear fades away. What’s left is the confidence in who they are, what they can do, and that invisible strength that makes them shine, no matter how many times they’ve been there before.

Being a teacher feels a bit like that. Especially during those first days of school, when the classroom fills with new faces and you hold the key to open new worlds. Even if you’ve been teaching for years, part of you still feels like it’s your first time. It’s a mix of nerves, excitement, and uncertainty. You wonder how things will go, how the kids will react, and how you’ll feel. These questions are only answered as the weeks pass, when routines slowly settle in and everything starts to take shape.

After more than twenty years of teaching, I can tell you, I still feel the same way sometimes. Like I’m stepping into the unknown, needing to give my best without knowing how things will turn out. It’s feeling both vulnerable and strong. Does it mean I haven’t learned anything? Is there something wrong with me? No. It’s something deeper. Every new beginning takes courage. No matter how many times you’ve done it, the challenge is the same: to connect, to inspire, to transform. And to do that, you have to be willing to start over again and again.

With time, I’ve realized that the discomfort we feel at the start isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength. It’s the fire that pushes us to grow, to try new things, to reach our students’ hearts in fresh ways. It doesn’t matter if you’re an athlete, an entrepreneur, or an artist; starting over is where real strength is born.

That’s why I say this is my superpower: feeling like a first-year teacher every single year. It’s my secret ritual, my source of energy and creativity. No matter how exhausting, stressful, or messy the start of the year is, I know that’s where the opportunity lies. The chance to do things better, to break the mold, to leave a mark.

Every year, I dive into that feeling of newness with a clear purpose: not to settle. Not to stay safe. To explore, to make mistakes, to create. Because in that feeling of starting from scratch, there’s the spark that fuels my passion and keeps me alive in this profession I love.

Here are six reasons why this uncertainty has become my greatest strength:

1. Fresh energy at every beginning
Every new school year, I wake up with new fuel. It’s energy with no baggage, no disappointments, just hope, excitement, and an open mind to reinvent each day.

2. Flexible and dynamic thinking
Each group of students is different. Each class is a blank canvas. That pushes me to listen better, observe more closely, and adjust my teaching every step of the way. I keep learning and growing instead of staying stuck.

3. Freedom to handle the unexpected
When you begin without strict routines or assumptions, you move more freely. Surprises become chances to make bold decisions and keep your students’ attention and trust alive.

4. Renewed creative strategies
Each school year is a new game; there’s no instruction manual. That challenges me to design new strategies that keep my students engaged, curious, and eager to learn.

5. Freedom to create without limits
A new year is a blank canvas. There are no rules, just possibilities. My creativity can fly, and that leads to real, unique learning experiences.

6. Safe space to try and fail
Being in “beginner mode” permits me to test things out, make mistakes, and adjust quickly. I don’t aim for perfection, I aim to improve. That keeps my teaching fresh and effective.

Now I want to speak to you, the one reading this, who is in that moment where everything begins, where your backpack feels heavy and your heart is full of questions. I know the start can be tough. I know your head may spin and your heart may race. But I also know this: that beginning is the biggest gift we get as teachers.

That first day, that first week, that beginning is your chance to write a new story. It doesn’t matter if the last one was hard, if you made mistakes, or if you felt like you didn’t do enough. Today, you have the power to choose how you want this school year to be.

Will it be with fear or with courage? With doubt or with curiosity? With resignation or with hope? The answer is in your hands. And the magic comes when you decide to be brave, even if you’re scared. To create, even when you’re unsure.

That’s why I invite you to embrace the feeling of being “new” every year. Use it as fuel for your growth, your passion, and your dedication. See it not as something to fear, but as your superpower, the thing that keeps you alive, creative, and connected to what truly matters: the children waiting for your light to help them shine.

You’re not alone in this. Every teacher who’s ever felt this way is walking with you. We are a community of brave souls, willing to begin again and again, knowing that the real power is found in the beginning.

And so you’re not alone with that feeling, I want to share some activities that have helped me turn the start of the school year into a magical moment of deep connection. These are exercises for you and your students to help you begin the year with open minds and hearts ready to grow.
